We have multiple users running V9.1 and Windows 8.1 and getting random crashes while saving files. The event viewer always shows design.exe crashing because workbox.dll creates an access violation. Sometimes the file gets corrupted and loses data back to the last save and some times saves to some random date and an empty file. We have the 40 or so users working off the local desktop and not on the network drive. Tried compatibility modes for design.exe. Run the maintenance file cleanup daily. Short of downgrading to Windows 7 we are out of options. Does anyone have any ideas on what we can do or try?

      Hello Jon,

A faulting workbox.dll module usuually refers to a printer or printer driver issue. Possibly one of the instaled printers neet to be removed or updated.
A design.exe faulting module can be any number of things from lack of a dedicated GPU, registruy related etc…
You can try running basic 2020 Maintenance and resetting the 2020 registries which works with resolving most issues.
If the issue persists, I would suggest contacting a support agent directly who can more accurately determine where the issue may be coming from and login to the computer if neded.

      Thanks Roger,

I will definitely make a change to a user’s default printer driver to see if that helps. What does “resetting the 2020 registries” mean?

      Thanks for your help,

      Jon P.

      Hi Jon,

As Roger mentioned workbox.dll is usually related to printer driver issues. You can test this by creating a new generic text only printer and setting it as the default printer.
      – Go to device and printers then add a new printer.
      – Add a local printer.
      – Use the existing port.
      – Select Generic for manufacturer and Generic / Text Only as the printer then click next.
      –  Do not share (this shouldn’t matter).
      – Set it as the default printer then click finish.
Once that is done open 2020 Design, go into preferences from the File menu. Open the menu for overall settings and select the Generic printer as your default printer. Restart the program and hopefully that will resolve the issue.

As Roger also mentioned, resetting the registries and basic maintenance may help. Note that resetting the registries will also reset your preferences including the default printer, you will need to reselect your preferences.

To reset the 2020 registries in version9.1:
      – Open 2020 Maintenance tools.
      – Click on internal tools.
      – Click on register 2020 files (If you get any errors during this process, do not continue to the next step and call tech support instead).
      – If the files register without error messages and where the file names where it not displays finished. You can click delete 2020 reg.
      – It will prompt you “do you want to continue?”  Click yes.
      – Restart 2020 Design. Make sure you put back the Generic printer as the default printer.

If the crashing continues, I would recommend calling our tech support team to further assist you.

      Hope that helps.
