Accessorising the kitchens and bathrooms you design can dramatically impact the look and feel of the space. Get it right, and accessories can bring the room to life—adding character, making it look realistic and giving it that all important ‘wow’ factor.
Here are six tips for adding room accessories:
1. Green fingers
Adding a plant to your designs instantly gives that homely feel and, as an added bonus, can really make your lighting scheme come to life by creating realistic shadows on the floor, cabinets and walls when placed in front of a window.
2. Picture this
Placing pictures or other wall artefacts on blank walls help to lift the design and bring plain spaces to life.
3. Mirror, mirror on the wall…
A mirror is a designer’s secret weapon. Far from simply being a practical object in which to check your appearance, a mirror can be used to amplify light, add drama, create interesting reflections and frame views.
Mirrors add light and depth to the room interior. So if you are designing a room which has a small window, place a mirror opposite or next it to increase the amount of natural light cast into the room. A mirror will harness any daylight possible so the bigger the mirror, the brighter the space.
If you are designing an awkward space such as a room with a small gap or a sloping ceiling a mirror can be used to either enhance the space or draw attention away from it.
And, if the room you are designing is small, adding a mirror will expand the space in an instant.
4. Bottled up
The finishing touches make all the difference to your design, but they can also enhance other aspects of your render. Plus it’s a great idea to include strategically placed bottles of white wine on the counter—the sunlight looks great passing through the bottles!
5. Blooming marvellous
Flip through any consumer home magazine or indeed the latest copy of OK or HELLO!, and there will be vases of flowers or bowls of delicious fresh fruit on every counter top. So why not add these to your designs so that your customer feels their new space has the wow factor of a ‘celebrity’ kitchen or bathroom.
6. Less is more
Whilst it is very tempting to add a myriad of room accessories, it is important not to make the room feel cluttered and close in the space. Use a few carefully selected accessories to enhance your lighting scheme and make the space feel personal so the customer has an immediate connection. Plus, adding a finishing aspirational touch can give your design the edge that makes your customer say ‘yes’.
